I did B.A. with Environmental Studies (EVS) major and Economics minor. The EVS major is one of the top courses offered in FLAME with a very comprehensive curriculum that was at par with international universities. Courses like Field Methods in Earth and Environmental Science, Principals of Biological Diversity, and Remote sensing were practical and hands-on.

I became interested in economics in class 12. I was a commerce student then and liked accounting and business studies. On campus, I took a few courses in economics and realized this is meant for me. I did four math courses because the economics department advised me to, and I did ‘Principles of Economics.’ Finance helps me understand how money works and the way people use their money. Economics is a study of choices.

I graduated from FLAME University with a psychology major and sociology minor. Even though I am pursuing a Masters in Clinical Psychology, the sociology courses at FLAME have largely contributed to my overall success. The main reason for this is that I have always been able to apply what I learnt in my sociology classes in the field of psychology. While the former speaks about the community and the latter focuses the individual; the gregarious nature of human beings bases interactions between the individual and community on a daily basis.

I’ve always been interested in world affairs, politics, how the government works. In both my major and minor you learn how governments work and how policies are formed within the government. They are interconnected which makes this combination very helpful, for the people who will be pursuing this stream later. Right now I’m enjoying a course on modernity, nation state and colonialism. Plus I enjoy learning international relations theory, and about international organizations.

In my first year in my first term I did many humanities courses; Academic Writing, Iconography and Cultural Identity and the Body. A lot of reading, writing, thinking. This initiated me into humanities at FLAME and I settled into LCS. I selected an open minor so I could focus on sociology and film along with LCS. LCS extends into the ambit of sociology and film.

Business and politics is not a combination you can study in most places. It’s either one or the other. But I read the news every day and I’m interested in politics and political affairs. And these days political marketing is emerging. It’s not traditional politics with just campaigning. Politics uses social media and digital marketing, mass media and so on. So I want to combine both of these and carve a profession out of it. There’s a firm called Indian Political Action Committee (IPAC), run by Prashant Kishor.

Even before I joined FLAME I wanted to do literature. I studied humanities in the 11th and 12th. Growing up we never had a TV so I read a lot, and I liked writing as well. In the first year at FLAME the humanities courses were very informative, and I got to learn a lot, and was challenged continually in my thoughts. I had also done a course on international relations and comparative politics, which was a gateway to International Studies. Ideally I would like to do something at the cusp of the two, LCS and IS.

The major was because of interest and aptitude. I didn’t have an economics background but took up the principles of Economics Course here. Also, I’ve been a part of Model United Nations and the first seven or eight MUNs I did – both at FLAME and before- were economic committees. After speaking to some professors here, I zeroed in on economics. I was sceptical about the math involved, but the faculty helped me so that wasn’t a problem.

I've always enjoyed literature, the process of analysis, the theories. In my first year I really liked the course Great Books in History. We were reading novels and plays and discussing the themes. Started with Baudelaire, we did 100 years of Solitude by Marquez, and Metamorphosis. Our final assignment was a performance, Death and the King's Horseman. I also enjoyed my Images of India course, which is looking at the writings about India. LCS keeps me in touch with even pop culture.

My purpose here was to study film, because that's been my passion for a lot of years. And what I understood from professors here was that you need to read, to watch a film. They go hand in hand. Film is also a text, and across many courses in LCS we analyze films.

I started studying psychology in the 11th, in Mumbai. I enjoyed understanding disorders and treatments that you can do. And I went for sociology because I enjoy understanding the contemporary world. Sociology accompanies psychology in a very clear way. It doesn’t overlap, but complements.

I’m also doing a distance learning program with the London School of Economics. While doing that I realized I need formal maths training for economics. I saw that the Applied Math program at FLAME was strong, and that I can apply it to economics. I thought applied math would complement economics and finance.
